After unconditional love, support and attention there may be nothing more powerful than the gift of education parents can give their children. Contrary to the popular notion, child education is more than getting the child enrolled in a good school. It is getting involved with that education. It’s been long recognized that parents as a child’s first teachers are the essential link in improving child education.
Here are 6 ways how parents can get involved in child education for better outcomes.
1. Make time to work on skills. Spend at least 30 minutes a day to working on alphabet recognition, number sense, shapes, or memory games. It will actually help them when they begin their preschool.
2. Set aside time to visit the school for volunteering and connecting with your children and their friends. Regularly communicate with the teacher and school staff to know your child’s progress. Learn as much as you can about your child’s school. Get to know your child’s teachers and tell them that you want to support your child’s education.
3. Spend time with your kids when they are doing homework. Help them develop a positive attitude towards homework and learning in general. Work with your child every day so that he or she knows that education is a top priority.
4. Talk with your kids about their preschool experiences. Ask specific questions like: “Did you make any friends?” “Do you like the preschool activities?” etc.
5. Make every instance an opportunity to learn. For instance, while doing laundry you can ask your kid to sort out clothes by color. They can put the dark-colored clothes in one basket and whites in another. Though it’s a simple activity but it helps your child develop color sense. You can also ask the teachers and school staff to share with you a few ideas about how to help your child learn at home.
6. Take your child to libraries, museums, zoos, outdoor sites, and other places that can help him or her learn.
7. Set a time for watching Television. And make it a point that you sit with your kid while he watches his favorite cartoon on TV. Too much TV or video games can make your child a couch potato. Instead of letting your child spend too much time on TV encourage him to play outside and do physical activities. Make it fun by joining your preschooler and his friends in the outdoor activities. |
