Writing a letter to Santa with your child will not only be fun but can be a learning experience for you both. As it is still possible to mail these letters to Santa, it will also teach a child how to go about mailing a letter. You can show the child how to put the letter to Santa in an envelope and address it, adding the stamp and then putting it in the mailbox until the mailman comes along in his cart and takes it away to the North Pole. Santa’s official address is: Santa Claus, c/o Postmaster in Northpole, AK, 99705
I am told if you send the letter in good time he will respond to it, and it will be stamped North Pole. The town it actually goes to employs lots of people to reply to these letters – I can’t imagine there is much else to do up there.
You can leave it to the imagination of your child how he will go about writing a letter to Santa, what his choice of paper and pens or crayons will be. There are so many nice sparkly gel pens on the market; he or she may want to write it in a Christmassy color using green or red sparkle pens.
It may be a good idea to sit with a small child through the whole process, that way you can draft the letter in pencil and they could go over the top of your letters with their choice of pen. The paper can be decorated with Christmas trees and other Christmas symbols if the child is adventurous. With children who can just about write, they probably will need some help too. It will be quite an eye-opener for you when it comes to the list of things they would like to get for Christmas as gifts. That’s the good thing about writing the letter in early November, that way you will have plenty of time to try and find the things your child would like.
There have been some especially nice letters from children who want to give things to other children at Christmas and want nothing for themselves – some of them are very moving. It may be quite revealing about your child’s personality when you are writing a letter to Santa together.
There will certainly be a lot of excitement when your child gets his reply from the North Pole, he will be checking that mail box every day! You could also explain what all those other things you get in the mail box are when he brings the mail in – the sooner your child understands about bills the better.
I wonder if children will still be writing a letter to Santa in a hundred years from now. I’m told he has a number of different email addresses, but SantaClaus@gmail.com isn’t nearly so exciting as an address at the North Pole is it?
