When you are trying to lose fat / weight, I am often asked what are the key things you need to do to give you the best results? The answer can seem obvious or surprising to some people but, if you aren’t aware of it, it can seriously damage your attempts at losing weight.
So, what is the answer?
DRINK!!!
Now, when I say drink, don’t go and crack open a bottle of wine. I mean water and drinks that are good for you that contain a lot of water. Thinks such as green tea, tea tree supplement, and of course, water itself.
Drinking water may be the most important piece to the weight loss puzzle. Water contains no calories, fat, or cholesterol and is low in sodium. It is nature’s appetite suppressant, and it helps the body to metabolize fat. Current research shows that low water intakes yield an increase in fat deposits. Conversely, high water intake reduces the amount of fat deposits. Without enough water, the kidneys cannot function properly. As a result, some of their workload is pushed off onto the liver, in turn preventing the liver from operating at peak levels.
How does all this tie into weight loss? Because metabolizing fat is a primary function of the liver, and because the liver can’t function at peak levels when taking on the added workload from the kidneys, less body fat is metabolized and more is stored. This leads to either weight gain or reaching a plateau of weight loss. To increase your ability to metabolize fat and lose weight, you should drink plenty of clean water to improve your kidney and liver functions.
What’s more, you can often mistake thirst for hunger – I know this sounds daft but the two feelings are very similar. It’s worth trying to drink a glass of water if you think you are feeling hungry – see how you feel afterwards! Actually, having a glass of water about 15 mins before a meal will suppress your appetite and leave you much less likely to overeat when you have your meal.
How Much Should You Drink?
You should aim for 1.5 – 2 ltrs of water per day as a guide. Drinking green tea will add to this total. It’s a good idea to maybe buy a 1.5 ltr bottle of mineral water and drink from it little and often – this way, you know how much you have had. It’s not as hard as you think – try it – you’ll be amazed at the results!
And it does work! I have one of my bootcampers who has recently lost 12lbs and 5 cm from her tummy and she puts it down to one of the main things being that she is drinking a lot more water and swapped normal tea for green tea. She also says she has much greater energy levels, so it’s a win-win!
So, it’s time for you to seriously think about what you want in terms of fat loss and fitness. Even if you do nothing more than drink more water, you will feel better, and your body will be working more efficiently because of it. You will, of course, need to do more than just drink more water if you want to lose fat – ask me what if you need any help with that.
So, get out, drink more water and feel great for it! The choice is yours!
