Losing weight while enjoying a healthy, tasty and sustainable way to continue to keep weight off has long been seen as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – nice to think about but unrealistic to achieve.
Too often you hear stories of people who have lost a lot of weight by following low fat, calorie controlled diets only to gain it all back again and some. By some estimates, more than 80 percent of people who have lost weight regain all of it, or more, after two years. Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles analyzed 31 long-term diet studies and found that about two-thirds of dieters regained more weight within four or five years than they initially lost.
So, how do you lose weight and keep it off? The simple and obvious answer is to eat more of the better, healthy, natural foods and less of the processed, high fat, high sugar, high salt “convenience” foods that are all around us. Sounds easy and it is – IF you think about your current habits and are prepared to change them a little and stick to the changes.
One way of doing this is to introduce what are known as “Superfoods” into your everyday diet. Superfoods are so named because they are high in health benefits such as being high in anti oxidants, often high in things like vitamins and minerals, and high in fibre. Doesn’t sound too exciting but, when you hear what some of these Superfoods are, you will be surprised at how easily they can become part of your regular diet – and add new levels of flavour to your palate.
Tomatoes, oats (porridge), blackcurrants, blueberries, sardines, sweet potato, green tea, and beetroot are all in the Superfood category and there are many more that provide extra health benefits. By introducing some of these foods into you diet, you are gaining massive health benefits, and getting some great tastes too!
Looking at a specific Superfood – blueberries, the health benefits are well documented:
High in anti oxidants
Rich in Vitamin C
Boosts immune system
Helps with memory
Lowers the risk if heart disease and diabetes
High in fibre
Specifically, in a study by the University of Michigan, blueberries help to reduce belly fat if used as part of a healthy diet. Clearly, that doesn’t mean you can eat unhealthily and eat blueberries and still expect to lose fat.
Finally, Superfoods are often seen as expensive but that is not usually the case. Take blueberries as an example – typically they will cost about £2.50 – £3 per punnet which sounds expensive. However, a handful of blueberries as part of a fruit salad or smoothie will give 5-6 portions (and they freeze really well). This means that you can introduce a Superfood into your regular diet for less than the cost of a daily chocolate bar.
So, the choice is yours. Try some Superfoods as part of the new you and lose weight, feel great, and have all the natural health benefits of these great foods!
