On the other hand, Ansel Adams - pretty far up in most people's photographic pantheon himself - snarled that Steichen was unquestionably the "anti-Christ of photography". Steichen's admirers, and they have been many, have suggested that he did more than any other practitioner to force a reluctant art world into accepting photography as a legitimate modern medium; his detractors, even when they concede this, generally retort that he then did more than most to drag it back down into intellectual disrepute again.
