Painting with light to make photographs is nothing new, but rarely practiced. The technique has been used to photograph architectural structures, caves and other subjects that would be difficult or impossible to light in one exposure. It involves sequential flashes or continuous light at different appropriate angles while the camera's shutter is kept open in the dark. In recent years, specialized commercial lighting equipment has been developed for the purpose of practicing this light brush technique in the studio for advertising and industrial photography. However, such equipment, usually consisting of a high-intensity light source, fiber optic cables and a variety of sophisticated hand pieces, is expensive and thus out of reach for the amateur photographer.

While he was still in his early twenties, Edward Steichen (1879- 1973) was already being described as "perhaps the greatest photographer who ever lived". On the other hand, Ansel Adams - pretty far up in most people's photographic pantheon himself - snarled that Steichen was unquestionably the "anti-Christ of photography". Steichen's admirers, and they have been many, have suggested that he did more than any other practitioner to force a reluctant art world into accepting photography as a legitimate modern medium; his detractors, even when they concede this, generally retort that he then did more than most to drag it back down into intellectual disrepute again.
